It cannot be emphasized enough that The Shepherd’s Home is unique in the realm of foster care. Children that come to us become fully integrated into the McCall community. They attend public school, they visit the local ice-rink and ski hills, and they participate in all sorts of out-door seasonal activities and school sponsored programs. In short, The Shepherd’s Home strives to instill a sense of community in all of its children by letting them know that the community not only values them, but that they have value to add to the community.
In order to best serve both children and the surrounding community, The Shepherd’s Home is committed to working with the family unit – not just individual children. Beyond making every effort to keep siblings together, The Shepherd’s Home offers parenting classes to all who are interested, we offer crisis care and private placement as a means of helping families get to a point where they can care for their children on their own, and we work hard to provide a smooth transition back to family homes once children have been in our care.

of sponsors and participants. If your business or corporation is interested in becoming a sponsor,

Planned Giving
As the Shepherd’s Home looks to the future and defines its role within this very dynamic area, the topic of
sustainability continually arises. Planned giving is one of the most effective ways to ensure that The
Shepherd’s Home will continue to have a positive impact on Idaho’s children, Idaho’s families and the
community at large for years to come.
Have a discussion with your tax or legal advisor about ways to make a planned charitable gift to
The Shepherd’s Home, a gift that requires consideration and planning in light of your overall estate plan.
There are numerous planned giving vehicles and combinations that allow you to tailor-make your gift plan.
More information about Planned Giving is available under the Shepherd’s Home Foundation tab below.
Gifts of Needed Items:
Caring for a household of approximately 8 children at one time requires a large quantity of supplies. If you’d like to
help, please contact us for a list of typically needed items as well as specific items that the Home
currently needs.
A donation of “points” from either Paul’s or Ridley’s local grocery stores is a great way to help the Home save money on the regular grocery bill. This can be handled at the customer service counter of both stores.
Gift certificates from department stores, Target, Shopko, Wal-Mart and Old Navy are an excellent way to ensure that we can provide appropriate clothing for every child who comes to the Home.
**Please Note** While we are always grateful for the thoughtfulness of our donors, it is typically more useful for the Shepherd’s Home if second hand items are taken to the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop. The Hospital Auxiliary has generously agreed to provide The Shepherd’s Home with needed items, free of charge. By donating second hand items to the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop instead of the Shepherd’s Home, you will not only be ensuring that The Shepherd’s Home receives useful items, you will help The Shepherd’s Home staff save valuable time and resources in managing unneeded items. If you have questions about specific items, please feel free to contact the Home office.
How Are Monetary Donations Utilized?
- Annual Operation Costs for the Shepherd’s Home: $250,000
- Approximately $108/day/child
- Includes food, utilities, clothing, transportation, staff salaries, and home maintenance.
- This also pays for the invaluable services associated with breaking the cycle of abuse that many of
our residents are caught in.
- Counseling for children and parents
- Parenting classes and resource materials available to all community members
- Opportunities to become involved in the community through wilderness activities, school sports, youth group activities, etc.
- National Average is $109.59/day/child for publicly funded foster care that does not typically cover care associated with prevention.
- The State of Idaho reimburses the Shepherd’s Home for a state-placed child at an average rate of $12.25/day/child; thus, 85-90% of the funds needed to operate the home must be raised primarily through private and foundation donations.
- The cost to meet the needs of the Shepherd’s Home children is substantial, but it is minimal compared to the results of inaction. Ultimately, $108 per day is a small price to pay for hope, healing, community health, compassion and a whole life-time of possibilities for a child. There aren’t enough opportunities to thank you for your continued support of the Shepherd’s Home.
- Approximately $108/day/child
What is The Shepherd’s Home Foundation?
The Shepherd’s Home Foundation exists to provide long-term financial support for the Home. It is a sister organization that has its own Board of Directors who focus on managing and growing investment donations to the Home. The Home and Foundation Boards work closely together to ensure financial stability of the Home as well as share fundraising responsibilities and goals.
Planned Giving*
The ultimate goal of the Shepherd’s Home Foundation is to raise enough principle such that the home can be fully sustained on interest monies. Please consider, and have a discussion with your tax or legal advisor about supporting the Shepherd’s Home Foundation in the form of Planned Giving.
Planned gifts are usually deferred, meaning they are arranged now and fulfilled later. For example, a person could include a provision in his or her will to make a bequest to a charitable organization. That arrangement would be a "planned" gift.
Or, a person might establish a charitable trust that could provide income to the donor (or someone else) for a period of time (usually for life). After this gift-deferral period, the trust would "mature" and the remaining assets would go to one or more charities. This is called a charitable remainder trust.
Another kind of planning device allows a donor to place assets in a trust that pays out income to charity for a period of years. Then, when this trust "matures," whatever is left goes back to the donor or to someone else stipulated by the donor. This is called a charitable lead trust.
Another deferred gift instrument is the charitable gift annuity. This is popular with many donors because it represents a life-time contract between the donor and a charity, and because it is relatively simple to understand and establish. For example, a donor gives $25,000 to a charity and receives, in return, a set amount of money every year for the rest of his or her life. The donor also has the choice of naming someone else as the "annuitant," or person who receives the annuity payments.
Planned gifts usually include legal documents and often require the assistance of a qualified professional advisor to complete. Because of the size and potential impact of such gifts, a donor should consult with his or her professional advisors before completing the process.
